PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Dozens of friends and family members gathered at The Met Philadelphia on Monday to mourn an up-and-coming local rapper who was shot and killed last week in Olney.
Devin Spady, better known by his rap name YNG Cheese, was fatally shot in the back on Thursday. A witness told police that he was shot after he got out of a car near Mascher and Nedro streets. Two other men were hit.
“It’s hurting the city real bad,” said DJ, who attended the funeral service. “He’s family to me, my little cousin.”
He said this shooting shows that no one in Philadelphia is immune to gun violence.
“It’s just senseless, a young father at 25 years old,” he continued. “He didn’t hurt nobody. He didn’t do nothing to nobody. Just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Spady is the son of well-known Philadelphia rapper and podcast host Gillie Da Kid.
Antwan Cobb grew up with Gillie, and he watched Spady grow up, too. His death still seems unreal to him.
“I just really didn’t want to believe it, honestly,” said Cobb. “It’s just the tragedy of our city and what’s going on. The kids are just getting ahold of these guns. It’s just not good.”
No arrests have been made in the shooting. A motive remains unknown.
