PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police say that a 12-year-old girl was shot in the stomach in North Philadelphia's Fentonville neighborhood when a gunman fired into a nearby group of men.
She was on her way home from Felton Intermediate School when the shooting happened at about 4 p.m. Tuesday near the corner of D Street and East Wyoming Avenue by a nearby grocery store, law enforcement said.
According to police, a group of men were standing outside on the corner by the store when a small red car with three people inside turned onto D Street.
"You can see a red car turning the corner. There was a group of people, adults. The back seat passenger rolls down a window. You see an arm come out of the window and multiple shots are fired," said Philadelphia Police Capt. John Walker.
She has been listed in stable condition.
"This is a terrible situation. A lot of people just don't understand that when you fire that gun, the bullets have no name," said Walker.
"An innocent kid like this trying to live her life, going to a store like kids do, should not have to be at a hospital at this point. We need the neighbor's help. We need people to do the right thing."
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw called the shooting as well as other incidents with women as the victims Tuesday, senseless violence.
Police ask you to call them if you have any information on the suspects or the red car that was involved in the incident.
