72-year-old woman stabbed to death, suspect killed by police in South Philadelphia

The incident happened in the Point Breeze neighborhood

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia Police shot a man they say stabbed his 72-year-old aunt in Point Breeze Tuesday afternoon, and both have died.

First District police officers were called to the home on South Beechwood Street near McKean Street just before 4 p.m, where they found a 36-year-old man actively stabbing his aunt.

Authorities said police tried to disarm him, telling him to drop the knife, but he charged at them, and they twice tried to tase him, but it didn’t work. Another officer then shot at him three times, striking him in the side, shoulder and arm.

The 36-year-old man was taken to Penn Presbyterian where he later died.

The woman was stabbed several times in her back and armpit and rushed to the hospital, where she also died.

The officer who fired the fatal shot is now on desk duty, pending the outcome of an investigation.

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw lamented the stabbing as well as other incidents with women as the victims Tuesday.
