SHARON HILL, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Three weeks after an eight-year-old was shot and killed outside a high school football game in Sharon Hill, the Delaware County Black Caucus wants to make sure their voices are heard as the investigation continues.
State Senator Anthony Williams joined other members of the Delaware County Black Caucus at a location not far from where Fanta Bility was shot and killed on August 27th at an Academy Park High School football game.
About two weeks ago, the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office said their initial investigation shows a “high probability” that gunfire from Sharon Hill police officers killed Bility.
Williams passionately conveyed that the community deserves answers.
“We are holding on by a thread. We can’t wait much longer about what this process is going to look like. If it’s forensic eveidence, we need to know how long that’s going to take. If it’s going to be another investigator, we need to know who that is and how long that’s going to take," Williams said with emotion.
“Be very clear, we’re not here to tear anything down, and I’ve heard those rumors. We’re not here to disrupt. But we are here to make sure justice is complete, thorough, and done, and accountable.”
The District Attorney's office said there may have been gunfire in the direction fo the police offiers when they returned fire. Williams and other community leaders said they want to know how and why police fired shots into a crowd that included children.
“There were children and parents leaving this area. If you do not have your target in sight, who were you firing on? You have to ask that question," NAACP Darby Area Chapter President and former police officer Sheila Carter said.
Williams said he is in regular contact with District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer, and is urging community members to let the district attorney’s office finish their investigative work.
“I’m asking my friends and neighbors to allow a new district attorney who’s had the courage to step up, doing a thorough investigation to find evidence that points in a certain direction, to complete his work," said Williams.
Williams also shared he wants to make sure everyone who was emotionally affected by the shooting has access to any help they need.
“We want to make sure the children who are in the school, who have to come by the spot where this death occurred recieve continuing counseling, along with those families," Williams added.
The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
