PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 3-year-old boy has succumbed to his injuries after being rescued from a house fire in Chester, Delaware County, last week. His mother remains in critical condition.

The fire started on Nov. 19 around 9 p.m. in a twin home on Wilson Street, near Second Street, just blocks away from Subaru Park.

Firefighters were on the scene within minutes. Samantha, who lives on the block, said the woman who lives in the house was screaming because her son was still inside.

"All you can see was part of her hair burnt and her arm," she said. "From my understanding, she was screaming, trying to get back in the house. She didn't want to leave, which is understandable — who would want to leave their child in the house?"

Fire officials said crews went up to the second floor, grabbed the child, and ran out.

Both mother and child were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Neighbors said another child who lives in the house was able to run out and get to a safe place.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
