NJ man indicted in cold cases involving sexual assaults of 5- and 10-year-old girls

Brian Avis faces eight charges after 1996, 2003 crimes in Atlantic County, New Jersey

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An Egg Harbor City, New Jersey man has been indicted in Atlantic County on eight counts in the cold cases of sexual assaults involving girls 10 years old and younger.

Brian Avis, 59, faces charges after the sexual assaults of a 10-year-old girl from Brigantine in 1996 and a 5-year-old girl from Galloway Township seven years later.

Avis is awaiting trial at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

After incidents were reported to Brigantine police in 1995 and 1996, officials said someone was partaking in "voyeuristic behavior," breaking into at least two houses in an attempt to assault girls.

According to state officials, Avis broke into a home in Brigantine City in 1996 and sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl as she was sleeping.

Earlier this year, DNA technology was able to link Avis to that case.

In 2003, police in Galloway Township went to the home of a 5-year-old girl after the report of a burglary. The girl's mother told police that she saw a man quickly leaving the house, and when she found her daughter, her pajama pants had been pulled down.
