Philly cop recovering at home after close call with gunfire while responding to carjacking

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia police officer is recovering at home after taking a graze wound to the head on Monday night.

The name of the officer has not been released. He is 28 years old and a four-year veteran of the force.

Police commissioner Danielle Outlaw says officers were responding  around 8 p.m. to a call about a car jacking on Reese Street near Reed Street in North Philadelphia.

"We located what we thought was the vehicle, and someone at some point ... began shooting at the officers that were there," Outlaw said.

The officer, still conscious after the shooting, was taken to Temple University Hospital.

Police gathered at the hospital in support of one if their own. He was released from the hospital just before midnight.

Police have not made any arrests. They are asking the public for help to find the gunman.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video and talking to witnesses to try to track down a suspect.
