UPDATE: Teen arrested after shooting of Philadelphia police officer

UPDATE: Tuesday, August 24, 6:52 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia Police have arrested a 16-year-old suspect, after one of their officers was shot and another was hurt Monday in North Philadelphia.

Police said they arrested Jasir Harris, who is from Philadelphia. He potentially faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and related offenses.

The shooting happened just after 8 p.m. Monday near the corner of North Reese and West Dauphin streets.

Police got a call about a carjacking on Aramingo Avenue near Cumberland Street in the Old Richmond neighborhood. The owner of a white Malibu was tracking the car with GPS to North Reese Street near Susquehanna Avenue. According to police, the officers discovered the car and found someone exiting the driver's door of a nearby vehicle.

Authorities said the officers turned their police vehicle around to investigate when someone fired at them. Officers then got out of their patrol car and started a chase on foot on Reese Street.

"We located what we thought was the vehicle, and someone at some point...began shooting at the officers that were there," said Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw on Monday night.

According to authorities, one of the officers, 28, took a severe graze wound to the head.

Another bullet struck a car window, and flying glass injured the other officer in the face.

Both officers have been treated and released, with the officer who was shot being treated at Temple University Hospital.

Police said that after an investigation, they were able to find a suspect whom they believe fired shots at the officers, and identified him as Harris. They tracked him about a block away from the shooting.

Outlaw said Harris has an extensive criminal record. Sources tell KYW Newsradio's Kristen Johanson that Harris had been arrested twice before, for illegal guns and a robbery.

“I am relieved and thankful that this dangerous individual was quickly apprehended. Due to some excellent police work, Mr. Harris was quickly taken from the streets and into custody - where he will hopefully face the serious legal consequences that he should have faced a long time ago," said Outlaw in a statement Tuesday.

"It is nothing short of a miracle that we aren’t planning funerals for two of our brave police officers."
