PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police officers have fatally shot an armed man who shot at officers in South Philadelphia Tuesday evening.
The deadly shooting happened near the corner of South Bancroft and Mifflin Streets in the Newbold neighborhood, not far from Passyunk Avenue.
Investigators on the scene said the situation started Tuesday morning at about 10 a.m., when someone filed a report with police about a domestic aggravated assault involving a handgun.
Sgt. Eric Gripp said that at about 6:15 p.m., police and SWAT officers came to the area with a warrant.
“As they came up to a doorway on the property, the door was partially ajar and they were able to see the offender," said Gripp.
"They knocked on the door, told him to come outside, at which point he produced a handgun.”
Gripp says the suspect fired at least three shots at police, and a SWAT officer returned fire, hitting him several times throughout the body.
Police took the victim to the hospital, where he died about 15 minutes later.
“Too many folks have access to these dangerous weapons and unfortunately we end up in situations like this," said Gripp.
No officers were hurt. The officer was placed on administrative leave as they continue to investigate.
