REC Philly offers $100,000 to creatives who honor Philadelphia Black music history

It's the second year the Fashion District arts hub is holding the grant contest

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia's historical contributions to the music world are well known, and REC Philly is giving Black creatives a chance to showcase their talents by honoring them through Black Music City.

REC Philly in the Fashion District is a creative hub for artists of all genres to gather create and express. This is the second year they are hosting Black Music City.

The program allows creatives to share their projects honoring Philly's rich Black music history from McCoy Tyner to Patti LaBelle, and have a chance at winning a grant to further their art.

"We do this because it's extremely impactful work," said REC Philly co-founder Dave Silver.

"Putting capital directly into the hands of creators, letting the creators do more of what they love to do in a time that's maybe difficult for them to do what they do."

He said contest organizers are looking for "originality, authenticity, storytelling, and just sticking to the theme, Philadelphia's Black music history."

That can be done in various ways, be it song, dance or pictures.

"Some people may say I'll put together an album of covers from Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff from the Sound of Philadelphia days, or a video of inspiration from Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff," said Hupfeldt.

REC Philly Marketing Director Tim Huff said this project keeps the city's rich music history alive.

"This is kind of a good way to introduce the younger generations to it, not necessarily the people creating, but their audience, community, friends, and family," said Huff.

The project has grown and the grants have doubled over last year.

The submission deadline has been extended to January 17. $100,000 in grants will be awarded. Winners will be announced in February.
