NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — The parents accused of locking up their teenage daughter for years in their Blackwood home entered not guilty pleas in court Monday.

Brenda Spencer and Brandon Mosley were arrested in May. The two are accused of pulling Spencer’s daughter out of school after sixth grade and holding her captive since 2018.

Spencer and Mosley, the girl’s stepfather, allegedly chained her up in a bathroom, locked her in a dog crate, and locked her in a bedroom for years, forcing her to use a bucket as a toilet, before she eventually escaped to a neighbor's house.

Mosley is also accused of sexually assaulting the girl. The state offered a plea deal of 50 years for Mosley, who faces a maximum of life in prison.

Spencer was offered 25 years to a maximum of 30 years if convicted, an offer her attorney says he isn't seriously considering.

Defense attorneys say they still haven’t received all the evidence they need from the state for discovery. That is expected to be completed within the next few weeks.

Both are due back in court on Oct. 7.
