PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It was a particularly violent 24 hours in Philadelphia: Three people were killed and at least a dozen others were wounded in separate shootings on Thursday.
The shootings happened in several different neighborhoods in the city — Kensington, Frankford, Feltonville, Strawberry Mansion, and West, Southwest and South Philadelphia.
Four of the incidents had multiple victims, including a double shooting that left two people dead in Southwest Philly. That happened around 10 p.m. at 67th Street and Greenway Avenue. The victims were both 32 years old. Police believe they were targeted, since at least 13 shots were fired at close range. No one was arrested in that case.
The other deadly shooting happened earlier in the day. Around 2 p.m. at 4th and Manton streets, not far from Jefferson Square Park, police said a man in his late teens or early 20s was killed. No one was arrested.
The latest figures from the Philadelphia Police Department show 132 homicides so far this year. That is actually down around 9% compared to the same time a year ago, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there has been less gun violence in the city.
At the beginning of the week, the department reported 562 shooting victims so far this year, which is seven more than the same time last year. The number of shooting incidents was roughly the same, at 1,033 this year compared to 1,032 at the same time in 2021.
Of the 116 fatal shootings in 2022, 9% of the victims were 18 years old or younger, according to the Controller’s Office.
