
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two men were killed, and three teens and a man in a wheelchair were wounded in shootings during a violent July Fourth holiday weekend in Philadelphia.
In the Point Breeze neighborhood Friday night, near 19th and Reed streets, an unidentified man was shot several times. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators believe he was in his mid-20s.
At 9 p.m. Saturday in West Philadelphia, near 43rd Street and Wyalusing Avenue, a 29-year-old man was shot and killed.
Then, shortly after midnight on Sunday, police responded to a triple shooting in North Philadelphia, near 25th and Hager streets, where three teens were injured. A 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were both shot in their legs and a 14-year-old girl was shot in the hand.
Investigators said all three were placed in stable condition. At the time of the incident, no one was arrested. According to the police department, those three teens were of more than 100 kids that have been shot in 2023 alone.
At 5:30 a.m., police said a 53-year-old man in a wheelchair was shot several times on Spring Garden Street. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Police reported at least 11 other people were shot in separate incidents over the weekend and taken to the hospital.
According to data from the Philadelphia Police Department, nearly 750 have been injured by gunshots. There have been more than 210 homicides in 2023, which is down from 259 this time last year. While numbers are down, gun violence this year still remains among the highest in the city’s history.
