Trio of 14-year-olds arrested in Mount Airy for carjacking, stolen guns

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Three 14-year-olds were arrested Sunday after police say they carjacked one person in Philadelphia and stole another vehicle. Authorities say they also picked up three stolen firearms.

Officers were tracking a stolen black Nissan in Mount Airy Sunday morning around Chew Avenue and East Washington Lane, when they say they noticed a Nissan oddly parked in an apartment complex. When they approached it, three teens jumped out and ran.

Police ran after them and eventually caught up and arrested them. Officials found three guns tossed in the teens’ path. All three of the firearms were stolen.

Along with the stolen Nissan, officers found another car, a red Volvo, in the same apartment parking lot. They say one of the teens had the keys in their pocket.

Two of the three teens have been arrested before — one for robbery and aggravated assault with a gun, and the other for theft and receiving stolen property.

All three have now been charged as juveniles with more than a dozen offenses, including robbery of a motor vehicle, theft, conspiracy and gun charges.

The city’s carjacking task force, which includes the ATF, FBI and detectives from each division, is continuing to investigate to see if the teens were involved in other car thefts.
