PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An Uber driver is in critical condition after police say a couple of carjackers shot him as he was trying to get away.
It happened around 11:40 p.m. Thursday on Torresdale Avenue, near Cottman Avenue, in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia.
Authorities say the driver was parked in his 2021 Toyota RAV4 on the side of the road, on the phone with his cousin, when two armed men came up to him and forced him out of the car.
According to police, the men told the 53-year-old driver to get on the ground, and he was shot in the leg and hand. He remains in critical condition at the hospital.
The two carjackers got in his car and drove away. Police have not made any arrests.
Carjackings have been on the rise in the city. Police say thieves are targeting newer-model cars and Toyota Highlanders, in particular.
Less than a week ago, a 60-year-old man was shot and killed in an apparent carjacking in nearby Rhawnhurst. He also had a Toyota RAV4.
