We've heard it before, but now it's starting to become insulting.
Whenever Astros management attempts to defend first baseman Jose Abreu, who has largely been a disappointment since signing a three-year, $58.5 million contract prior to the 2023 season, they talk about "the back of his baseball card."
Yes, Abreu was an accomplished baseball player when he arrived to Houston, both with the Chicago White Sox and as a Cuban baseball player. It's also true that he appears to have completely lost his ability to hit the baseball.
Not that he forgot how to hit but simply lost the ability. It's painfully obvious now in his .078 batting average and -1.1 bWAR through 51 at-bats this season.
Yet first-year manager Joe Espada just couldn't help himself when asked about it after being swept by the Atlanta Braves.
