The Texans created $6.53 million in salary-cap space by restructuring veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks' contract, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Nearly $10 million of Cooks' salary is being converted into a signing bonus, lowering his $12 million salary cap figure, according to Wilson.

The Texans now have about $23.4 million to work with under the NFL salary-cap limit of $182.5 million, which was announced earlier this week.

Cooks is entering his second season with the Texans after being traded from the Los Angeles Rams for a second-round pick last year.

Cooks had 1,150 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 81 catches for the Texans last season. It was his fifth 1,000-yard receiving season in six years.

The Texans' wide receiver group took a hit earlier in the week when they decided not to use the franchise tag on Will Fuller, allowing him to become a free agent.

Also still looming large is the status of quarterback Deshaun Watson, whose trade request is well-documented.
