AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- An Austin Police officer was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after a serious crash on the city's east side.

First responders were called to the scene just after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning along FM 969 between Johnny Morris Road and Decker Lane.

An APD patrol vehicle and an 18-wheeler were involved in the crash. Police say the 18-wheeler made a U-turn in front of the officer's patrol vehicle, which became pinned underneath the 18-wheeler's trailer.

Austin Police Association President Ken Casaday said in a tweet Wednesday morning that the officer involved sustained critical injuries and was hospitalized.

Investigators spent much of the morning rush hour working the scene, with traffic being detoured to nearby roads. Crews finally reopened FM 969 just after 9 a.m.
