Maryland Governor Wes Moore knows he is up against history when it comes to keeping the Commanders in their current state.

But, even if many fans want to see a return to RFK Stadium, Gov. Moore is convinced that Maryland and the site of RFK Stadium represents the most fruitful option for Josh Harris and the Commanders’ new ownership group.

“A lot of my family are Commanders fans, and old Washington football. That was their thing coming up,” Gov. Moore told BMitch and Finlay on Tuesday. “It’s complicated. A lot of familial memories about these old teams and the victories were at RFK. I definitely understand that and respect that, but I think my goal and my focus is to create new memories and new championship runs.

“We want to do it over in FedEx. We want to do it in Prince George’s County.”

There are other options as well, but Gov. Moore, who has reportedly already met with Magic Johnson (one of the marquee members of the new ownership group), believes keeping the franchise in Landover is the best option, and is excited to show the new owners why that is the case.

“When you look at places like the Navy Yard, it’s an interesting and compelling model…you want something where people can go and make it a destination spot,” Gov. Moore said. “You want it to say ‘we can go to a game, but there are concerts there and hotels and restaurants.’ There are things you can do to turn it into an experience and not just a singular event.

“As far as I can see, we are the only place that’s really advocating for a Commanders new stadium. We are committed to keeping them in Prince George’s County…but we really want this to be a destination that people in the community can benefit from, but people outside of the community will want to come to.”
