Ron Rivera has named Alex Smith the Washington Football Team’s starting quarterback for their Week 10 game against the Detroit Lions.

Smith, who entered Sunday’s 23-20 defeat to the New York Giants after starter Kyle Allen sustained what is believed to be a dislocated ankle, will make his first NFL start since he suffered his own gruesome leg injury in Week 11 of the 2018 season. (Allen is believed to be lost for the year.)

Rivera announced Dwayne Haskins, the second-year quarterback who was the team’s No. 15 overall pick from 2019, would be the backup.

It will be 728 days since Smith last started an NFL game.

In Sunday’s loss, Smith ended his own 728-day drought with his first touchdown pass. Unfortunately, he also threw three interceptions, including two on Washington’s final two possessions.

When Washington traded for Smith to be the starting quarterback before the 2018 season, they had a different head coach, different front-office leadership, and even had a different name.

Two years later he will make his 11th start for the team next Sunday in Detroit. It will be after the second-year QB was benched and his replacement suffered a serious injury to his leg.

When Smith last started a game, Washington was 6-3 and in the hunt for the NFC East.

When he makes his next start, Washington will be 2-6, but still, somehow in the hunt in the NFC East.
