The Athletic’s Daniel Kaplan detailed how the sale of the Commanders could take a lot longer than some think, and Chris Russell laid out the potential timeline on Tuesday, reminding everyone that, thanks to the “snake” Dan Snyder “still slithering,” this process will drag out much longer than Washington fans hoped.

“The bad news that is gonna piss all of you off…the longer this dragged itself out by Dan kicking and screaming and crying to the finish line, trying to sucker every dollar he can and wait as long as he can before he gets voted out,” Chris said. “So much so that because the bid was just forwarded with the paperwork on April 17, the process is exhaustive enough that as Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic pointed out today, the final approval of the Dan Snyder deal might not happen until summer or he said specifically training camp.

“There are meetings in Minneapolis May 22, and I believe the next meetings are in August, so maybe that is when he’s talking about…but you have the paperwork that has now been forwarded to the NFL, and looked over by bankers and lawyers and whatever. Then, whatever corrections and issues and flags that come up with that have to be fixed and then resubmitted to the league, then submitted to the finance group, which my understanding is like five owners and some lawyers.”

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise to Chris, but he says the media’s portrayal of the sale and the buzz around the thought of finally being free of Snyder’s rein led many to lose sight of the process that it takes to sell a team, and the owner that the league and the new owners are dealing with.

“For all of you guys who thought this was gonna be the snap of a finger,” Chris said. “I can’t begin to tell you how naïve that was.”
