The NFL Draft is under two weeks away and despite all the news off the field for the Washington Commanders, they have a big opportunity to improve the team this season with the No. 16. overall pick.
CBS Sports' Josh Edwards joined The Kevin Sheehan Show on Tuesday to break down the first round of the draft, who the Commanders might take, and a little about the quarterbacks and who he sees as the best defensive player in the draft, Alabama pass-rusher Will Anderson.
In his latest mock draft, Edwards has the Commanders selecting cornerback Devon Witherspoon (6-feet, 181 pounds) out of Illinois.
"I love everything Witherspoon brings to the table as far as his mentality, playing that position," Edwards told Sheehan. Howwever, he added that it is "probably unlikely" that Witherspoon falls to Washington at 16.
"He could go as high as 7 to the Raiders," he said of Witherspoon, but there are a lot of teams between the top 8 picks and the Commanders who are going to be more focused on the offensive line and other positions than cornerback and could lead to the Illinois corner falling to Washington.
Of course, if one of the top pass rushers falls, Sheehan and Edwards talked about the possiblity that the Commanders select yet another edge player if they think that player is the best on their board.
Edwards, who also covers recruiting for the University of Kentucky football talked about former Wildcats quarterback Will Levis' prospects at the NFL level.
"I do think he has the traits to develop into a potential starting quarterback. I think it's all there, it's just a matter of is he gonna put in the time to make it happen at the next level and I think he will," Edwards told Sheehan. "I think he's got a good shot. I think he's probably been one of the more polarizing quarterbacks in this draft class, but [the negativity has] gone a little bit too far, in my opinion. I think he's still a very good player that warrants top 10 consideration."
But Edwards admitted that while playing behind a bad offensive line, Levis had a sub-par season at Kentucky that is not what many would expect from a potential top 10 pick in the NFL Draft. "His weakness has been overexaggerated," he added about a QB with a strong arm and athletic potential, but somebody who needs to work on his accuracy.
