We found out Wednesday, via Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic, that there are a lot of abnormalities or complexities with Josh Harris’ bid to buy the Commanders – and later in the evening, a WaPo report stated that the NFL’s finance committee, which met Wednesday to discuss the bid, came out of the meeting even more confused about its nature.
Are we on the verge of this thing falling apart because of Harris trying to skirt NFL debt rules?
“I think it’s a little discouraging that the NFL may have to change the rules, but I ultimately don’t think it will take down the bid,” JP posited. “The Post article said they’re not going to be able to meet the May owner’s meeting timeline to ratify the sale, and it just seems a little disheartening that this is going to linger longer.”
“It just shows you how much money you need to buy an NFL franchise, but I think that if they really want Dan Snyder out, I’d think they’d waive any debt rules,” Bish replied, something EB agreed with:
“They’ll do anything they can to get rid of Dan, and if this is the best they can do, as long as it still ups franchise values, they’ll figure out a way to make it work,” Eric said.
Cakes read the last line of the PFT story on the WaPo and Athletic reports about how the NFL will seemingly do whatever they need to do to get Snyder out – and “this is why you’re seeing other billionaires being added to the roster of the Harris group.”
“They have at least four multi-billionaires, at least on paper, attached to this bid, and Magic Johnson is close,” Cakes said. “I think we’re so far down the road and the owners are so desperate to get rid of Snyder that they’ll do whatever it takes now to make sure this thing closes.”
The guys wondered if this maybe opens the door for Steve Apostolopoulos or someone else, but as Cakes said, “unless your name is Bezos or Walton, you have to assemble a team, because only so many people are that rich that they can take on more than 30 percent ownership of an NFL team.”
