Scot McCloughan helped build the then-Redskins to two winning seasons in 2015-16, and he was part of a lot of success in Green Bay, Seattle, and San Francisco, so he knows what it takes to build a winner.
So, then, it’s a good thing that he praised the Commanders’ 2023 draft and Sam Howell during a podcast appearance on Monday?
“He still runs a scouting service and a lot of teams tap into his work – and he said on that podcast that he’s a big Sam Howell fan, and he liked Emmanuel Forbes over Christian Gonzalez,” JP revealed.
“I’ve seen several people say that, and one reason is that Gonzalez didn’t necessarily impress a lot of people in the interviews,” EB replied. “It seemed like maybe football wasn’t his priority, he had other interests.”
McCloughan said about Forbes that his “ball skills change the game, but you have to wonder about his durability. Physically, can he hold up? But, he has excellent coverage skills and is a tremendous athlete.”
He also liked the Quan Martin and Ricky Stromberg selections, and was more on the upside of Braeden Daniels despite some flaws – but he REALLY liked sixth-rounder Chris Rodriguez, “the one guy I really liked with a downhill, no-BS running style, who I think is an every down running back starter.”
“Not everyone hates the Draft there, Mr. Bickel!” Bish crowed, but EB had some intel on why Rodriguez dropped in the draft.
“I think that he had a DWI, that’s what they’re talking about, and if it’s just a college mistake type-thing, then people make mistakes,” EB said. “But if it’s a trend, you’d be worried that he has a real problem, but we don’t know yet.”
“He has a chance to make it as a third running back – he seems to be the direct backup to Brian Robinson’s skill-set,” Cakes said. “He doesn’t have the receiving skill-set, but that’s okay.”
All good...except for, well, JP wonders if McCloughan’s two full drafts and 2017 board were good enough to really believe a lot of what he says.
