Junkies: Ron Rivera done with Commanders if he's wrong about Sam Howell

Ron Rivera compared Sam Howell’s skillset to Brock Purdy when speaking with reporters on Wednesday, and The Sports Junkies believe this will be the head coach’s last-dash effort to keep his job after this season if he is indeed hitching his wagon to Howell’s success.

“I can’t believe he’s linking the remainder of his tenure in Washington to a seventh-rounder for the Niners,” John Auville said. “I think you’re drawing really thin thinking Sam Howell is gonna outduel guys like Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott and Daniel Jones. It’s a lot to ask out of a second-year guy with one start.”

Purdy was a sensation after taking over in San Francisco, but extended success is hardly a given, especially after his elbow injury in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Howell has thrown just 19 passes in his NFL career in one game.

“Rivera better be right, because he’ll be gone in 2024,” James Bishop said. “I just think it’s a ballsy, ballsy move for Rivera to try and get another contract extension with a fifth-round quarterback.”

Auville says if the upcoming season is anything like the first, even with Howell under center over Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke, then Rivera’s time as head coach will be over.

“If they win 7-8 games, I don’t think there’s any way he’s sitting across from a new owner and convincing them that they’re on the right track for the next four or five years after a seven or eight win campaign,” Auville said.
