CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 25-year-old West Side man who was shot by a Chicago police officer on Monday has been charged with three felonies.

According to police, Javontay Kindred was among a group standing by a car that was double parked on the 2100 block of South St. Louis Avenue late Monday morning.

When officers pulled up, they said Kindred ran away allegedly “while in possession of a firearm.”

It’s unclear whether the firearm was visible.

A police statement said officers followed Kindred to a vacant lot where one shot him.

There was no mention that he showed the gun or pointed it at officers.

Kindred was hit in the upper body and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Police said a gun was recovered.

Kindred was charged with one count of aggravated assault to a police officer and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon.

No officers were hurt, Chicago police said. Those involved in the shooting were placed on routine administrative leave and will be off the street for 30 days.

On Tuesday, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it was “unclear … if the individual discharged his weapon at police.”

COPA said it was responding to Monday’s shooting shortly after it happened. Anyone with information about the shooting should call the oversight agency at (312) 746-3609.

The shooting happened so close to Crown Community Academy of Fine Arts that members of the administration “heard shots fired in the vicinity of the school,” principal Zarree Walker wrote to parents later Monday.

Kindred is scheduled to appear in bond court Wednesday.
