(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A campus visit for your future college student can be more than a campus visit. It could be a family vacation, too, says one travel expert.

Parents of college-age young people may want to plan a tour that includes stops at different types of colleges and universities so that their high schooler can weigh the offerings, says Cindy Richards, editor-in-chief of She Buys Travel.

“You want to look at different kinds of schools,” she said. “So, plan a road trip where you’re going to look at a small private school; a sort of a mid-sized school and then a big school, like the University of Illinois.
You can get a feel for the kind of campus each one is going to be. That will help your child narrow down: Are they a big school kid or a small school kid?”

She cautions against cramming too many stops into one of these trips. That could be overwhelming.

Bonus: By taking siblings along on such a journey, that could rule out the need for a future visit to a particular campus, Richards says. Just make sure you include activities that will be fun for everyone, she said.
