DES PLAINES, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Maryville Academy is moving - and expanding - its special needs school in the northern suburbs. The administration broke ground on the new Charles H. Walsh Sr. Academy and Career Tech High School earlier this week.
Jen School will move from Des Plaines and take over the former South School on Touhy Avenue in Niles. Principal Anne Craig said they started construction in July on the major overhaul including renovations and updates to the electrical system and plumbing in the building.
She said their students range in age from 14 to 22 and will take as long as they need to finish a discipline.
"It really depends on the student and their individual IUP and what their needs are," Craig explained. "Our goal is to always reintegrate our students back into their home school and their home communities."
The academy will offer classes in construction, computer gaming and healthcare among other options when it is expected to open in August next year.
