INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Indiana State Senate will consider plans to increase mental services across the state next week. Hundreds attended a rally in Indianapolis to support the legislation.

Advocates for mental health services held a rally before boarding a bus to Indianapolis at the headquarters of the United Steelworkers Local 1014 in Gary.

The Deputy Mayor of Gary, Trent McCain, was among the group assembled at the union's headquarters. He told a story about something that happened 21-years ago to a 30-year-old autistic man in Nashville, who was killed by three police officers, because he became agitated.

"The call was a 10-35. That means mental," he explained. "This man could have been alive today if this effort was there then and that made an indelible impression on me."

Advocates for the mental health legislation want to see mental health clinicians respond with police in certain cases and they’re pushing for a mental health hotline.
