CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Ground has been broken for an affordable living community in Chicago’s Woodlawn community on the South Side.

The Park Station Lofts will be a mixed-income multi-used development on city-owned property at 63rd and Maryland. That’s Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor’s ward and she said the community was very involved.

“We had homeowners, renters, community organizations, church, too often they use us to fight against each other, so this was first time that we got to see us actually work together and look at the finished product, and so I’m very proud," Taylor said.

It’s a transit oriented project, just 350-feet from the Cottage Grove Station on the CTA’s Green Line.

Mayor Lightfoot was on hand for the event and has clashed with Taylor at times but had kind words for the fiery alderwoman.

"I also want to thank Ald. Taylor. Ya, we wrestled, several times, trying to make this right, but we knew we had to get it right," Lightfoot said.

The community is the first to comply with the city’s Woodlawn Affordable Housing Preservation Ordinance.
