CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Lightfoot will have another challenger in her bid for re-election next year.
4th Ward Alderwoman Sophia King announced Wednesday morning that she is running for mayor. King, who serves the South Side neighborhoods of Bronzeville, Hyde Park, and Kenwood as well as the museum campus and a portion of the South Loop, becomes the eighth candidate in the race to unseat Lightfoot.
“I love this city, we need a Chicago that’s safer and stronger. Let’s put an end to the false choices because we can have safety and justice, compassion and accountability,” King said in a campaign video released Wednesday.
First appointed in 2016 by then Mayor Emanuel, the 57-year-old King views the city’s police department as weak and ineffective. In an interview with the Sun-Times, King said her first order of business would be to overhaul the department. She said she would fire Superintendent David Brown, provide officers with more time off, as well as fill the nearly 1,500 officer vacancies.
“We are big enough and tough enough to tackle our most challenging problems in every neighborhood, but the only way we can do this is if we do this together- all of us and each of us,” King proclaimed in her announcement video.
