(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Some Chicago City Council members have launched new efforts to keep so-called “ghost guns” out of the hands of street criminals.
Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th Ward) and three colleagues are urging the Illinois Legislature and the Chicago City Council to pass measures making ghost guns illegal at all levels.
They are weapons sometimes sold in kit form over the Internet. They are assembled without serial numbers and, Villegas notes, they are untraceable.
In 2016, only two ghost guns were seized by Chicago police, he said. Last year, 455 ghost guns were seized, he said.
At a news conference , Millie Burgos said her teenaged daughter was struck down by one of those weapons. She said she can’t understand why such guns can be sold without background checks.
