(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Now that school is back in session for most students, police in Antioch are warning about an increase in drug overdoses involving opioids.
The warning accompanied a video on the department's Facebook page showing officers using Narcan and chest compressions to revive an overdose victim.
Chief Geoff Guttschow says so far this year, officers have responded to 17 overdoses. Three of those people died, and just this past weekend, two teen girls and a teen boy were treated at hospitals for overdosing.
Guttschow believes knock-off drugs laced with Fentanyl are to blame. He says criminal organizations mass-produce the drugs that often look nearly identical to common prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
All Antioch officers carry Narcan, which can quickly reverse an opioid overdose.
