DES PLAINES, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A few families had to find temporary housing Thursday in the northwest suburbs after a fire destroyed an apartment.
A fire battalion chief returning from another call is the person who first spotted the fire and called it in near Des Plaines in Maine Township in the 9300 block of Noel Street. Fire Inspector Scott Peterson said the fire destroyed one apartment in a four-unit, two-story row-style building.
Witnesses had reported hearing a loud bang before the fire and Peterson was asked whether there’d been a natural gas explosion.
"It’s currently under investigation," he said.
"We do have the MABUS 3 Fire Investigation team, Cook County Sheriff’s Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal on a team effort right now actively conducting the fire investigation."
Peterson said residents made it safely out of the building and firefighters rescued a couple of pets. One firefighter suffered minor burns.
