CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- 36 beagles from a Virginia breeding and research facility that was found to have violated federal laws that resulted in dogs being ill, injured, underfed, and, in the worst cases, dead, arrived in Chicago early this morning and are being put up for adoption.
The beagles arrived at the Anti-Cruelty Society’s shelter on LaSalle Street and were greeted by cheers from workers.
The beagles travelled 800 miles arriving at about 2:00 a.m. and they appeared to be pretty happy.
"The Anti-Cruelty Society has been all hands on deck working diligently behind the scenes to prepare for their arrival by securing fosters, adopters, supplies, and funds to ensure that each beagle taken in receives the best possible care and outcome," the organization said in a statement.
They’re all females and they were all being given names-at least temporary names of famous women in music: Beyoncé, Dolly Parton, Selena, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner.
The beagles are among several thousand removed from Envigo, the facility in Virginia and have been placed in shelters across the country.
