BELLWOOD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Dozens of people in west suburban Bellwood had to be rushed out of their apartments after a powerful thunderstorm ripped the roof right off the building.
It happened at the three-story structure in the 600 block of South 24th Avenue.
“We all came out of our apartments. Everyone was nervous and scared. We don’t know what was going on. We all went to the basement, to make sure that we were safe and called 9-1-1,” one resident told CBS 2.
Other residents said the roof caved in, shingles falling into the kitchen of one apartment, trapping one resident under a table.
And in the neighborhood, trees were down, with one hitting a house and porch. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.
“The whole house shook, and we just came out and saw that, so it’s lucky that it didn’t go through because it’s really close to those windows,” one homeowner told CBS 2.
The Red Cross is helping now, finding temporary housing and offering any other assistance.
