CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Legislation that passed by the Illinois House would guarantee admission at the University of Illinois for some students.
State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi, R-Elmhurst, sponsored the legislation requiring the University of Illinois to create a pilot program that would favor in-state students for admission.
The pilot program would apply to Illinois community college students who graduated from a state high school, have a 3.0 GPA and completed 36 graded credit hours. The program would begin in the 2022-23 school year.
It was an overwhelming vote in the house: 111-0.
"I believe many of our community college students, and actually many of our high school students, don't get the consideration from the University of Illinois that they should, if they are top-tier students," Mazzochi told the Daily Herald.
The goal, she said, is to make sure students from throughout the state have the opportunity, should they hit the academic benchmarks.
