(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Will County Forest Preserve District says a bobcat was documented in one of its preserve for the first time.

The bobcat was recorded by a trail camera and was walking alone, along a game trail, in the Sand Ridge Savanna Nature Preserve in Custer Township.

Forest preserve officials posted the image earlier this week. The sighting comes six months after a mother bobcat and her kittens were photographed by a trail camera in the Kankakee Sands Preserve, which is nearby.

Becky Blankenship, wildlife biologist, says it’s rare to capture an image of a bobcat because they are so elusive.

They were listed as threatened in Illinois from 1977 to 1979 but have rebounded so that there are an estimated 5,000 bobcats in the state.
