HAMMOND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The search for a 12-year-old autistic boy who disappeared more than a week ago in Hammond, Indiana is over.

The Lake County Coroner has positively identified a body found Monday night in the Little Calumet River in Hammond as that of 12-year-old Kyrin Carter.

A kayaker, one of many volunteers involved in the search, spotted the body in the Little Calumet River - 300 feet from where the boy disappeared on May 15 from the Hammond Best Western.

The level of the river had been lowered to aid in the search.

Kyrin’s father, Leslie Carter, was there when the body was recovered. He was heard shouting "let me see him!"

Authorities showed Carter a picture of the body, but he continued to demand they let him see his son, the Post Tribune reported.

All along, it appears the boy's body had been in the river near the site that was the center of the search.

Surveillance video showed Kyrin was barefoot and wearing a light blue t-shirt and black basketball shorts with a white stripe down the side. He is about 5-foot-4 and 130 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

Kyrin's family had been visiting from Kansas City. The boy was seen on security video running from the hotel around noon on May 15. It appears he slipped out of a room when his grandmother dozed off.
