CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A young boy was taken to the hospital Monday after a SWAT standoff in Beverly, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Police said officers responded to a home in the 9800 block of South Charles Street at about 11:20 a.m. after learning a 10-year-old, who was reportedly in “mental distress,” had fired shots inside the home.

According to CPD, the boy stepped on the porch, pointed a gun at the officers and fired a single shot.

He also reportedly aimed at his own head multiple times, with officers trying to deescalate the situation.

Police said they ultimately fired a chemical at the porch, which scared the boy. The child threw the gun and was detained.

No one was injured.

Deputy Chief Migdalia Bulnes told reporters near the scene that the gun was unsecured in the home. Investigators were trying to determine how he got ahold of it. A law enforcement source said he found it in his mother’s purse.

The deputy chief said she was “impressed” by the police response.

“It really puts your training into perspective,” she said. “It’s a little bit more delicate because he’s 10 years old and he’s in distress. And we know that. He’s a child, so that’s what’s in our mind when we have discussions of what’s the next step.”
