CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago White Sox General Manager Rick Hahn and Executive Vice President Ken Williams have been “relieved from their responsibilities,” the organization announced Tuesday evening.

The terminations were effective immediately and come as the tail-spinning South Side franchise -- which reportedly may be exploring a move out of Chicago -- is 27 games below .500.

Williams was originally drafted into the White Sox organization as a player in 1982 and made his playing debut in 1986. After his playing days were done, Williams again found work with the White Sox in 1992 as a scout. He was named general manager in 2000.

Under his leadership, the White Sox its their first World Series since 1917 in 2005.

In 2012, Williams was promoted to executive vice president while Hahn was promoted from assistant general manager to general manager.

In a statement, White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf called the decision “incredibly difficult.”

“Ken is like a son to me, and I will always consider him a member of my family,” Reinsdorf said. “I want to personally thank Ken and Rick for all they have done for the Chicago White Sox.”

Reinsdorf added that the “well-worn cliche that professional sports is results-oriented is correct.”

The White Sox will begin a search for a single decision maker to lead the baseball operations, and the organization hopes to have an individual in place by the end of the season.
