(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Cook County sheriff is warning about a crew of burglars who stole from an elderly couple after distracting them on Chicago’s Northwest Side this week.

One of the burglars knocked on the door of a home near Bryn Mawr and Canfield in unincorporated Norwood Park Township on Monday evening. The suspect led the owners to the back yard to talk about a supposed problem with their water, sheriff’s police said.

During the distraction, four other burglars went through the front door and took jewelry and cash inside the home, officials said.

The 68 year-old woman and 71-year-old man saw one of the intruders and ran after him.

Two thieves got into a car, possibly a dark gray Kia Sorrento, while two others fled on foot. All were wearing masks and sunglasses.

Sheriff’s police urge residents not to open the door for unexpected visitors and call to verify if a person claims to be a utility worker.
