CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The new "Slice To Meet You" campaign pairs PAWS Chicago with Piece Pizza, located at 1927 W. North Ave., to bring attention to the shelter's longest residents.

"We are so excited about this collaboration with Piece Pizza,” said Jill Siar, PAWS Chicago’s Community Partnerships Manager. “Bill, the owner, actually came to us with this idea. HE said he's seen another shelter and a pizza company do a similar partnership and replicate it for PAWS. It was his idea."

The “Slice to Meet You” campaign will feature flyers of adoptable dogs on pizza boxes delivered across Chicagoland.

"As we all know, pizza is very popular in Chicago. Piece has thousands of pizza boxes going out each week so our pets are getting a lot of attention from new folks," said Siar.

Each flyer includes a photo and brief description of the dog, as well as a QR code that links to their bio on the PAWS website. Pups like Rocco, a 4-year-old Terrier mix who’s been searching for a home for one year, will be among those receiving attention from thousands of pizza buyers each month.

“Animals make our lives better; I will never live without one,” said Bill Jacobs, the owner of Piece Pizza, in a press release. “My hope is that this will be a matchmaking tool that introduces unique pets to their perfect someone. Plus, when you enjoy one of our delicious, specialty pizzas, a portion of your purchase will also help support the great work PAWS is doing on behalf of thousands of homeless pets every year.”

Piece will be running a special chef collaboration with some of Chicago’s culinary favorites through March 31, including limited-edition menu collaborations with Doug Sohn, of Hot Doug’s; Barry Sorkin, of Smoque BBQ; and Matthias Merges, of Billy Sunday. For each specialty pizza sold, $5 will be donated to PAWS.

"As a lover of both people and animals, our partnership with PAWS strikes a real chord with me,” said Rick Nielsen, Piece Pizza co-owner and famed guitarist of Cheap Trick, in a press release. “So, treat yourself with a great Piece Pizza and let's get these dogs adopted."

PAWS found homes for almost 4,700 pets last year.

"Who doesn't love a food and pets partnership?" smiled Siar.

PAWS Chicago, which stands for “Pets Are Worth Saving,” is a national model in no-kill animal sheltering and is committed to bringing an end to the killing of homeless cats and dogs. As Chicagoland’s largest no-kill shelter — and one of the largest in the nation — PAWS has helped to reduce the number of homeless pets killed in the city by over 91% since its founding in 1997.

Beyond adoption, PAWS also operates one of the largest, high-volume, free and low-cost spay/neuter clinics in the country, where it performs thousands of spay and neuter surgeries every year for communities that need the most help in controlling pet populations.

Recently, PAWS opened the nation’s premier medical hospital for homeless pets, which provides treatment for sick and injured dogs and cats in Chicagoland.
