The Chicago Blackhawks welcomed fans to take part in their annual tradition to paint the ice at the United Center for the 2022-23 season.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Dave Caswick.
Caswick, a mini-season ticket holder, was one of five lucky raffle winners selected to paint the ice. The logo is hand painted every year by fans and ice crew members.
“I’m a big Chicago Blackhawks hockey fan, it’s a great group of people I’ve been working with for the past 29 years.” said Joe Galullo, member of the Ice Crew.
Galullo started as a volunteer — it’s now his 29th season working with the Ice Crew. He said he loves seeing the excitement of the fans on the ice.
“It’s surreal. It’s truly surreal to be here on the ice, feet away where Jonathan Toews takes the opening face off,’” said Johnny Ley.
Ley is a lifelong Chicago Blackhawks fan. He said he can’t believe he’ll be able to watch this season knowing he helped paint the ice.
“I get goosebumps just being here and being part of this experience,” Ley said.
