A shootout between Chicago police and a suspect Sunday left two shot, including a Chicago police officer. This is the third time a Chicago police officer has been shot in less than one week, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said.

The officer’s condition is serious, but stable, Brown said. The officer was taken to University of Chicago Hospital. The suspect is in critical condition and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The shooting happened at 2 p.m. on the 6900 block of South Sangamon Avenue, Brown said.

Brown said the officers were performing a traffic stop when the suspect's vehicle pulled into a dead end. Brown said the stop resulted in an exchange of gunfire.

The incident concerned officers from the Chicago Police Department's 7th District. This is the second 7th District officer to be shot in five days.
