CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It was a sizzler in the Chicago area on Thursday, with a heat advisory in effect in many communities and real-feel temperatures of 100 degrees or more. Many people had to work outside in it.
Juan Diego Gallegos, 20, was cutting grass as part of a landscaping crew in southwest suburban Frankfort. He was wearing a light-colored, hooded, long-sleeved t-shirt as he worked.
“Now, you get really burned,” he said. “You can feel it in your skin right away if you don’t wear protective clothes.”
Gallegos said drinking plenty of water is also key to making it through this hot spell.
In another part of Frankfort, 25-year-old Chris Zdanys was part of a house-painting crew.
“[It’s] getting to the hottest part of the day … best thing you can do is push through it and try to put your headphones in, and just stay busy,” he said. “Time flies the less you check your phone and you keep working.”
Zdanys said he takes a two-gallon jug of water to work. His employer also provides cooling rags, which Zdanys said he wets and then hangs around his neck or under his hat.
“It’s a little hot,” he said. “You know. Nicer in the shade, but [I] can’t complain.”
