CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A man was hospitalized Saturday night after Chicago police officers shot him during a foot chase in the city’s South Shore neighborhood, officials said.
Interim Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller said tactical officers were conducting a narcotics investigation near 72nd Street and Exchange Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. when the suspect ran away.
“After a short foot chase, he turned and fired at the officers,” he said. “The officers returned fire and struck him in the left flank.”
CBS 2 spoke with a witness who said police shot the man while he was running away.
When Waller spoke to reporters Saturday night, though, he said officers recovered a weapon and shell casings from the man’s gun. Officials also said drugs were found at the scene.
An officer responding to the shooting was injured when he flipped his squad car, but police said it was not serious. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the shooting, and the officers involved have been put on desk duty.
