Exactly one week after being seriously wounded by gunfire in Englewood, a Chicago police officer has been released from the hospital.
Hundreds of Chicago police officers lined the sidewalk of the University of Chicago Medical Center as Erik Moreno left in a wheelchair, with a black sling on his arm.
Moreno was among three officers who, in street clothes, attempted to make a traffic stop at 69th and Sangamon last Sunday. That’s when, investigators said, a suspect opened fire and struck Moreno in the torso and arm.
The suspect was then shot by police and has remained hospitalized in critical condition. He was expected to be released last Tuesday, however Moreno was experiencing light-headiness and underwent more tests.
"Erik finally gets to go home and be with his wife and kids and home for Father’s Day so, it’s a rewarding day a couple of days later than expected but he’s much stronger and on the road to recovery.
" Men and women of this department, the rank and file officers do their best to support one of their own in these trying times," said Fraternal Order of Police president John Catanzara
Moreno became the second Chicago police officer to be released from the hospital this week after being struck by gunfire.
