CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Chicago police officer is in serious condition after being shot on the Near West Side Friday morning.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown provided an update. Brown said shortly before 8:30 a.m., 12th District officers responded to a domestic violence call coming from an apartment in the 1300 block of W. Taylor. Once officers reached the apartment’s floor, they were immediately met with gunfire, and a male officer suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to Brown.
Brown revealed that a University of Illinois at Chicago police officer, who was also responding to the incident, transported the wounded cop in his own squad car to Stroger Hospital. Brown believes the action taken by the UIC officer probably saved the 15-year CPD officer’s life. The veteran officer is in serious but stable condition, police said.
The male suspect who shot the officer was taken into custody and a gun was recovered at the scene, Brown said. The superintendent also noted that the suspect was a convicted felon.
Mayor Lightfoot joined the superintendent at the briefing outside Stroger Hospital and said this morning’s incident sheds light on the drastic increase of domestic violence in Chicago and that police are doing their very best in responding to these dangerous situations.
“Our police officers are valiant every single day and we need to make sure that we remember that and we thank them,” Lightfoot said.
