CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hundreds of Chicago Public Schools started providing free lunches to families today and will continue on weekdays through the summer.
Outside Hernandez Middle School, located in Chicago’s Archer Heights neighborhood near Midway Airport, take-home meals were handed out to hundreds of people.
Families at Hernandez and other schools will be able to get lunches between 10 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday.
“This is the first day we’re going to do serving lunch … for our students, our parents and our families that live around our community,” said principal Luis Tellez. "The Hernandez community is a very needed community, and we are blessed to have these services for them. We usually have between 300 – 400 lunches given to parents and students every day.”
Families can find a link for the CPS Summer Meal Finder online. All children up to the age of 18 may receive a meal at any site. No photo identification is required.
The meal giveaways will run for at least a month, with some sites providing meals into August.
